You can add NetBeans Ide to the list. I just tried number one and no errors and no warnings.
netbeans is free and in my opinion, the best ide I have ever seen.
In favor of visual c 6.0, remember this was the compiler that was king when all the win32 stuff came out, the docs are excellent, better, in my opinion than the later visual studio's because all of the cruft that it does not have. the version of msdn that came with it is great and all the books that document mfc and win32 use vs98 for the code.

I'll check it out Paul (NetBeans).  Also, I almost hate to admit it but Visual Studio 6 Enterprise Version with its awesome MSDN CDs is still my mainstay although it certainly is dated.  You are right though.  Lots of good articles & books.
