Capture image from firewire device

Did anybody here experimented with retrieving images from camera connected using firewire cable?
I would like to capture single frames, not video stream, from the camera (in my case Canon HV40).

I am not sure which API to pick for this task, any words of advice would be highly appreciated.

I have looked at ezTwain, but as the install CD of the camcorder does not contain TWAIN driver, this is probably not the way to go.
